Parking Assistance System

Parking Assistance System (PAS) as the name suggests, assist the driver in safe parking. PAS helps in detecting the distance between the vehicle and obstacle. The system emits Ultrasonic sound waves and then receives the reflected waves, detect the side of nearest obstacle, and calculate the distance from the nearest obstacle. The indication differs in different models. There are different types of indicating devices:

Visual: LED (light Emitting Diodes), VFD (Vacuum Florescent Display), Visual Image with OSD (indicating side/distance of obstacle)
Audio: Buzzer and Human Voice

TORQ Parking Assistance systems use ultrasonic proximity sensors embedded in the front and/or rear bumpers, to measure the distances to nearby objects at low level. The sensors measure the time taken for each sound pulse to be reflected back to the receiver. Depending on the speed of the vehicle and the distance to the obstacle, the system will warn the driver by visual and/or audible means about the risk of collision. The feedback to the driver will generally indicate the direction and proximity of the obstacle. Sensors are usually fitted to the rear of a vehicle but may also be fitted to the front. Rear sensors are activated when reverse gear is selected and then deactivated as soon as any other gear or neutral or park is selected. Front sensors are generally activated by pressing a button (Brake) and then automatically deactivated after few seconds when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed, this is to avoid nuisance warnings in slow moving traffic.

Important Points:

The System is designed only to assist the driver while parking of vehicle. It only helps him in judging from the nearest obstacle in rear or front (in case of Front Sensors installed) situation while reversing/parking. It is very important to note that the system is not intended to replace the driver’s attention, and therefore can’t be relied upon to an excessive degree. Please remember that ultimately, driving safety remains the sole responsibility of the driver.

The chances of collision and damage can be greatly reduced by using Ultrasonic parking sensor system; it will be of great help. However, under some circumstances the object may not be detected because of its size, shape, angle, position and material. Since the system relies on the reflection of sound waves, it may not detect some items that are not flat or large enough to reflect sound, for example a narrow pole or a longitudinal object pointed directly at the vehicle or near an object. So always be cautious while reversing/parking your vehicle, look behind and keep speed of less than 5 Km/hr, observe the people or objects that may suddenly move into your path giving little time for your system to respond.

It is very important that while reversing/parking, the speed of vehicle should be slow (approx. 5 Km/hr)
No routine maintenance is needed. If the sensor element is covered with dirt or sand, clean it carefully with water. Avoid higher pressure water to wash the sensor directly. Avoid use of abrasive and metal objects to clear the sensor surface.
